ERICA

Goal :
ERICA is set in the locus of Indonesian higher education system. As of today, there are more than 4,000 higher education institutions across the country where 263 institutions are polytechnics. Leaders, particularly those without formal training and experience in higher education management context, are struggling to improve the quality of polytechnics, making the transformation of the institution a long and steep process. ERICA is designed to accelerate the capacity building of these leaders which, in turn, can speed up the process of improving the quality of the polytechnics in Indonesia, particularly those which reside outside Java and Sumatera.ERICA took a practice-oriented approach to prepare these leaders to cruise over the highly dynamics, and often abrupt, Indonesian higher education landscape. ERICA is implemented in two phases: the first phase took the full virtual format due to the Covid-19 pandemic and was completed in December 2021. Phase two took place in Pekanbaru Riau on May 23 – 26, 2022. assuming that the pandemic is well under control and there is no travel restriction from our government. Polytechnic leaders from Java, Sumatera, and Kalimantan, focus on change projects which are unique and specific for their institutions within the four key areas: (i), Leadership and strategic management, (ii) Project management, (iii) Human resource management, and (iv) Quality assurance. These leaders hold various strategic administrative roles which allow them to create impacts in their institutions. The change projects are geared toward finding solutions to the challenges institutions are facing which lead the transformation of the institution to compete in the Indonesian as well as ASEAN and global context.By the end of the two-phase workshop, the participants are expected: (1) To understand the position and competitiveness of private polytechnics in Indonesia, (2) to have a solid comprehension on university governance structure and functional management in their institution, (3) to have the agility to maneuver through the fast moving higher education environment, (4) to make measurable transformation of their institution through the tools provided during the training, (5) to implement and evaluate the project during various stages of the training as well as to discuss the take-home points from other participants, and (6) to develop partnership and network among participants.We targeted 25 participants to join the workshop. The target group is aimed at newly-elected Directors, Vice Directors, Deans, Vice Deans, and Department Heads of private polytechnics in Indonesia. We put an emphasis on bringing in the participants from private Polytechnics outside Java and Sumatera.

Goal :
The 2023–2024 DIES NMT training is slated to take place within the landscape of Indonesian higher education. There are over 4,000 higher education institutions nationwide, with over 300 classified as vocational higher education. Out of these, around 50% are privately owned, and 80% of these private institutions, following the national accreditation ranking system, hold either a C accreditation or lack accreditation altogether. Demographically, regions with academically vocational solid higher education institutions are primarily concentrated in Java.Addressing the quality disparities among vocational higher education institutions, especially private ones, is a critical and urgent need. Leaders, particularly those lacking formal training and experience in higher education management, find it challenging to enhance the quality of these institutions, elongating the transformation process. The DIES training is strategically crafted to expedite the capacity building of these leaders. This, in turn, is anticipated to accelerate the overall progress in enhancing the quality of vocational higher education institutions in Indonesia, especially those residing outside Java and Sumatra.The objectives of the workshop are as follows: i) to provide participants with knowledge on the current issues in the Indonesian higher education landscape and correlate them with their role and function, ii) to equip participants with soft skills in managing higher education institutions to improve institutional performance, iii) to give participants the practical skills to adapt to changes in higher education policies, iv) to improve the project management skills of the participants through case studies, and v) to disseminate information on relevant funding opportunities for institutional capacity building.

Strengthening the Role of IQA in Facing the New Paradigm of Accreditation in Indonesia

Goal :
TrainIdQA is part of the DIES (Dialogue on Innovative Higher Education Strategies) – National Multiplication Training Programme 2019-2020 that is designed and specializes in the development of Higher Education Quality Assurance System in Indonesia. The training is carried out as a blended learning course and delivered bilingually. By the end of the training course the participants are expected to be able to: i) evaluate the readiness of IQA system towards meeting the new requirements for accreditation, ii) identify tools and procedures needed for strengthening IQA system, iii) plan and implement continuous improvement of IQA in the institution using Information Technology, and iv) enhance the relationship between QA strategies and HEI management.The target participants of this training program are Heads of the Quality Assurance Unit and Quality Assurance officers in Indonesian Higher Education Institution which are accredited B and C or in process for institutional accreditation.

You Lead Indonesia

Goal :
You Lead Indonesia (Young University Leaders in Indonesia) was a multiplication program of DIES trainings for university leadership and management. The theme of the training was "Managing Change and Sustainability in the Framework of Kampus Merdeka: Transformative Leadership for Indonesian Young University Leaders." Activities were carried out in stages consisting of 2 offline workshops in Surabaya (November 2023) and Bandung (July 2024) as well as online training sessions in February, April and June 2024. One of the outputs of You Lead Indonesia are 25 Project Action Plans (PAPs) which were designed and implemented by participants in response to the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka policy. Participants worked on their PAPs since the first offline training in Surabaya and reported their progress during the online sessions. They presented the results and implementation of their PAPs in the offline training session in Bandung reflecting how the participants, as Young University Leaders, have been equipped with the skills and knowledge of management and leadership in the tertiary context to answer the challenges of higher education in Indonesia.The training aimed at: i) developing leadership skills while contextualizing those skills with the culture and policies of the Indonesian Higher Education system (cultural customization), particularly in the context of Merdeka Belajar - Kampus Merdeka (Emancipated Learning), ii) developing the knowledge and skills needed (governance, change management, conflict management and project management) for young academics who have been appointed as university or faculty leaders to focus on sustainability in their endeavours - teaching, research, and services (the Indonesian Tridharma), and iii) facilitating participants to design a PAP (Project Action Plan) under the guidance of the experts and trainer team that will be implemented in their home institution to amplify sustainability in Indonesian HEI in the context of Kampus Merdeka.25 participants under 45 years old were selected among university personnel at the university level, i.e. directors of international office and academic and/or student affairs, the faculty level - vice deans and managers of academic and/or student affairs, and heads of department/study programs (undergraduate programs), and international office units.

Internationalisation Policies and Strategies to Support the Emancipated Learning Educational Policy in Indonesia

Goal :
This NMT workshop are delivered in 2 workshop (Workshop 1 in February 2022) and Workshop 2 in July 2022) and aim to increase the knowledge, competencies, and skills of International Offices in Sumatera, Kalimantan, and Bangka Belitung, Indonesia (especially small-to-medium international offices) and relate them with the new emancipated educational policy in Indonesia.The Workshops are delivered by a consortium of DIES alumni from Indonesia: Universitas Surabaya, Universitas Syiah Kuala, Universitas Ahmad Dahlan, Universitas Katolik Widya Mandala Surabaya, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, and Universitas Indonesia. The committee members of this workshop are graduates of the Dialogue on Innovative Higher Education Series (DIES)-DAAD programs: Management of Internationalization (MoI) and International Deans’ Course (IDC).By the end of the workshop, we expect to enable participants in: i) understanding the strong connection between internationalization within one’s own HEI and the new Emancipated Learning educational policy from the MoECRT, ii) nurturing a deep understanding of the concept of “Internationalization at Home” and its implementation, iii) practicing soft skills needed in building effective communication and managing potential problems in the fulfillment of HEI’s internationalization strategies, and iv) sharing best practices as well as expanding networks.The target group is small-to-medium international offices in Sumatera, Kalimantan, and Bangka Belitung, Indonesia.

Goal :
Indonesia - Deans’ Course for Private Higher Education Institution (INADC - PHEI) aims to prepare higher education top managers from private institutions for the challenges of holding the position as a leader in the dynamic landscape of higher education. It deals with various dimensions of university management such as finance management, quality management, and leadership, supplemented with practice-oriented sessions on project management.By the end of the training course the participants are expected to be able to: i) understand the current development of the higher education system in Indonesia and the position of private institutions in terms of its competitiveness, ii) increase understanding and awareness of their work situation (university governance structure) and functional management, iii) understand causes, consequences, and how to manage change in the fast-moving higher education environment and to make a transformation in their workplace.The target group for this training program is rectors, vice-rectors, deans, vice-deans, directors, and heads of departments from private HEIs in Indonesia.
